Topic: Now, Bath tub tiles Posted: Dec 16 2011 at 4:42pm |
|
I have a leak coming from the tiles in this bathroom leaking into another apartment. I know what is causing it, and need some tiles replaced, and the walls re-grouted. I think the time needed would be 3 hours, and another three hours the next day is my assessment.
As you see from the pictures, one pictures is hiding the problems with the tiles because its behind some plastic I put there to keep from getting water into another apartment. Looking at the tan tiles its the same as the ones I am going to talk about. The problem is the brown tiles popped from the wall, and with a gap on the top where grout should be, water is getting into, and pushing through to other side of wall.
In front of tub shows missing grout or cracked.

Hi Ernie... are you a tiler??? I'm not but my wife is a mosaic artist and the first thing she would say to your comment is... Is the substrate clean and sealed because it will just happen again? Are both sides of the substrate sealed because moisture can come through and destroy the adhesive and grout?
Like I said I don't do this but man have I heard her repeating this regularly because it is the most common reason for learner mosaic artists ( and others) to fail.

When they pull those tiles they better check the wall it may need to be replaced to The steam from the water may have warped internal

No, I am not a tiler, but saying that I can work with tiles just not on daily bases. I can do major repairs replacing bad tiles just I am not an installer from beginning to finish.

When you clean out the old grout, and replace with new it will look much better. In this case the original shower tiles of the 70's they did not use concrete board they used regular Sheetrock or plaster board it can not handle getting wet. Over time water making its way on to plaster board its starts to crumble and to disintegrate . I know how to fix this type of problem, but like any kind of patch it will eventually develop other problems. Patches can last for years if done right.
